Turn your drawings into versatile patterns

Step 1: Complete the pattern.

Drag the Selection tool across the outlined shapes without selecting the filled shapes. Hold down Shift as you drag to add to your selection. Then use the color swatches on the toolbar to remove the stroke color and fill the shapes with black.

Step 2: Make it seamless.

Select the art that bleeds over the left side and then copy and paste it. Press Control+F (Windows) or Command+F (macOS) to place the copy in front. With the copied shapes still selected, open the Transform panel (Window > Transform) and enter 12 in as the X axis coordinate to move the copied artwork over to the right edge.

Repeat the steps to complete the pattern on the bottom. Select the artwork that bleeds over the top edge and place a copy in front. Then type 12 in as the Y axis value.

Step 3: Create a mask.

A mask creates natural spacing between instances of the pattern when you use it to fill a design. Click the Create New Layer button in the Layers panel (Window > Layers), name it Mask, and move it under the Art layer. Select the Rectangle tool. Click the artboard to show the Rectangle options and enter 12 in for Width and Height. Use the Align Objects options in the Align panel (Window > Align) to center-align it with the artboard, and then remove any stroke or fill color.

Step 4: Make it a swatch.

Select the entire artwork and mask on the artboard, and then drag the selection to the Swatches panel (Window > Swatches) to create a pattern swatch. Click away from the artboard when you are done.

Step 5: Sample the swatch.

Select the swatch as the fill color and then drag out a rectangle to see how the seamless pattern fills the shape.

Step 6: Change the pattern scale.

Select the shape with the pattern fill. Double-click the Scale tool and experiment with the settings to get the look you want. Toggle the Preview checkbox to see changes.
